Charging Basics
Always rely on the operator’s manual specific to the make and model of your aerial lift for detailed charging instructions. The operator’s manual is located on the platform in the weather-proof compartment. It is considered a permanent part of the machine and must be kept on the MEWP at all times.
Make sure to park your electric aerial lift in a well-ventilated area on a firm level surface. If that’s not possible, chock or block the wheels.
Turn the machine off by making certain all e-stops are in the depressed or off position as well as the battery disconnect switch if applicable.
Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the charging area.
Connect the built-in charger to a dedicated 120volt receptacle using an extension cord.
Make certain you locate the proper place to plug in for charging the MEWP. Refer to the operator’s manual for details and look for decals on the machine that will identify the correct charger input.
Avoid this common mistake. All modern MEWP’s have a dedicated place to plug in an extension cord to conduct 120volts to the platform to allow the safe use of any required electric accessories, so make sure you identify the input designed for charging before you plug in your machine. Your machine will only charge if connected to the proper port, so make certain you understand which is the correct one.
The recommended discharge level prior to recharging the battery should not drop below 50%.
Let it charge completely, usually overnight or until the charger lights indicate it has been fully charged.
Keep an eye on battery charge level and never let your batteries get completely discharged whenever possible. If your batteries get too low on charge the onboard charger may not be sufficient to recharge them. In that case you may need to use a standard battery charger to get enough of a charge to operate your machine.
Checking Battery Water Level and Adding Water When Needed
- Always wear proper PPE (personal protective equipment), when checking battery water level including safety glasses and heavy chemical resistant gloves made of neoprene, nitrile or rubber.
- Check that the batteries are properly filled with water only after charging is complete unless the plates are exposed before charging.
- Due to potential expansion of electrolyte during the charging process, when charging lead-acid batteries, water should only be added after charging is complete to avoid acid overflow.
- Always refer to the operator’s manual for specific battery water filling instructions.
Key Tips
- Complete the charging cycle whenever possible.
- Use a heavy-duty, short extension cord of 25 ft or less whenever possible to ensure proper power flow.
- Always inspect extension cords for nicks or damage before plugging in to avoid electrical hazards.
- Check charger indicator lights to ensure battery is getting charged. If no lights are illuminated, check the cord or circuit breaker for issues. LED lights are often red or yellow when charging and green when charging is complete.
- Most electric aerial lifts will not operate when the charger is plugged in.
Bottom Line
Proper battery charging technique and regular preventative maintenance are the keys to extending battery life and on the job productivity.
